November 3rd 2009: GUITAR HEAVEN

A great (very intimate and sweaty) gig in North London this weekend. It was great to try out some new tracks in the set. "No Stone Unturned" felt particularly good. It was fun to play a UFO cover as well...
Greenday came straight from Wembley stadium to do a surprise appearance just after our set. Stayed and checked out a few tracks!!?.....
Last night I attended the Classic Rock Awards. Could not believe how many great guitarists that showed up and sat together at the ceremony. Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons, Slash, Brian May, Ron Wood, Pete Townsend. Joe Bonamassa got up and blew everyone away with a song as well. Truly amazing night. And of course there was a small Marshall amp in everyone's goodie-bag as we left :)
Meeting up with the guys again Wednesday and Thursday to finalize the set list for Germany. Soon we're on the road again.
See you out there,
Joey

Stay tuned!!! Very Happy

August 18th 2009: Review of the Bloodstock Open Air festival in Derby, 16 August 2009!!!!

Europe, photo by Ian Pollard

February 2010 cannot come quick enough. That's when melodic rockers Europe will be touring the UK again on the back of their new album 'Last Look At Eden'.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the title track of the album (and EP released on August 10) was the only reference to the new work in their one and a half hour set. It was a great opener though, setting the scene for one of the highlight gigs of the year.
The headlining position on the closing day of the three-day festival amongst such hardened metallers as Satyricon and Equilibrium may seem somewhat incongruous. I had no doubts though that the band would win over a cynical audience although I heard early crowd calls: 'Play Countdown and get it all over with…" "The Final Countdown" is a blessing and curse for the band, but more of that later.

Europe, photo by Ian Pollard

Joey Tempest and John Norum had told us in interviews that here was a chance to reach out to a new audience and upset their preconceptions and John Norum's comments that they can rock out as heavy as Metallica was certainly fighting talk.
Europe showed tonight why they are so enduring, even after a ten-year hiatus. Basically, they are consummate professionals, write fantastic songs wholly suitable for a festival event, and they rock like hell.
The band successfully updated their slightly iffy late eighties sound with 2004's 'Start From The Dark' with the emphasis on drop-tuning and rumbling riffs melded to effervescent vocal delivery and solid rhythm. It was the perfect cocktail to entice back the faithful and woo the cynical.

John Norum, photo by Ian Pollard

It has to be said that much of Europe's appeal lies with their guitarist John Norum. Terribly overlooked even by some of his peers (judging from a recent 'Classic Rock' magazine Top 50 survey) he is quite simply one of the best players on the planet. I cannot put it any other way. Every note seems perfectly calculated to connect - emotionally - with the listener and whether it is slower, gutsy riffing or more fluid runs the impact is always significant and never over-egged.  The instrumental 'Optimus' was an excellent showcase too.
John and the band were aided by a simply fantastic sound mix where you could pick out every instrument (and the vocals) clearly, but in front of the ubiquitous Marshalls and enveloped in dry ice,
Norum was the star.

Europe, photo by Ian Pollard

After that spectacular opening, the band quickly hit sixth gear with a volley of classics including 'Superstitious', 'Scream of Anger' and 'Sign Of The Times' whilst 'Love Is Not The Enemy and 'Always The Pretender' brought their story more up to date.

The funky swagger of 'Let The Good Times Rock' and 'Ready Or Not' (both from 'Out Of This World') and 'Seventh Sign' (from 'Prisoners In Paradise') were master strokes and particular highlights.  The latter has the same classic feel in the riff of '747 Strangers In The Night.'

Once again, toughened up for a Bloodstock crowd, these earlier songs came out fresh and exciting. And the older 'Seven Doors Hotel' benefited from deft interplay between keyboard wizard Mic Michaeli and John Norum.

Mic Michaeli, photo by Ian Pollard

Of course, by the time Joey Tempest introduced their comeback signature tune - 'Start From The Dark' - we were all ready for this other set highlight. Once again lifted by Norum's riffing and solos.
In a perfectly paced set, the band climaxed with 'Ready Or Not' and 'Rock The Night' before two encores including 'Getaway Plan' and that tune.
In fairness, whilst anathema to many, 'The Final Countdown' always comes across well as an encore piece and like all the earlier material the band have subtly rearranged and toughened things up. Closing a festival, it was pretty damn perfect.

John Norum, photo by Ian Pollard

When the band arrive in the UK next February it will be some three years since their last tour. Given that length of time, it will be pretty damn essential to get along to at least a couple of gigs. And given that 'Last Look At Eden' is a highly accessible album that pushes the band further forward, their Bloodstock appearance suggested they are poised to take a new set of fans with them too.

August 2nd 2009: INTERVIEW

July 30th 2009: Sunday 2 August, 21:00 David Randall talks to John Norum about his career

"Our interview was only going to be 20 minutes, but you can't cover a career in such time. After each set of 20 minutes (and there were four of these) we kept getting the bleeps and John's management thought I was writing a book! John was really cooperative though, and it is good to tell his story aside from that of his band Europe." (David Randall)

http://www.getreadytorockradio.com/john_norum.htm

John Norum is one of the great unsung guitar heroes of melodic rock. He formed Europe with Joey Tempest in 1979 and achieved great success with that band in the late-1980's culminating in the massive worldwide hit 'The Final Countdown'. John got increasingly frustrated with Europe's commercial synth-pop rock and left the band in late-1986.

Throughout the 1990's he pursued a solo career and the resulting albums featured Norum on vocals and guitar and guests including Goran Edman (Malmsteen) and Glenn Hughes. Several albums included Thin Lizzy cover versions, reflecting that band's influence on his guitar playing and music.

Whilst his solo recording career has been lower-key, his melodic style of metal-flavoured rock brought him to the attention of his peers and he joined Don Dokken for his solo album 'Up From The Ashes' (1990),  recorded ''Long Way Home" with Dokken (the band) and toured with them in 1997, replacing George Lynch, and again in early-2003.

By the late-nineties there was talk of a Europe reunion and an appearance of the original band members at a Millennium celebration in Sweden led directly to a new album 'Start From The Dark', released in September 2004.

Europe's latest album 'Last Look At Eden' is released in September 2009. The band play the Bloodstock Festival on Sunday August 16.

'Last Look At Eden' marks a slight change in musical mood from the previous comeback albums 'Secret Society' (2006) and 'Start From The Dark' (2004). But that shouldn't put you off, it is a grower too.

Secret Society, in particular, split the melodic rock camp somewhat, overall a heavier outing than previously and with John Norum's down-tunings and wah-wah riffs may have further alienated those brought up on a strict diet of late eighties cheese. The album owed more to bands like Audioslave.

'Last Look At Eden' is more mainstream, and more bluesy rock and roll. Norum's always scintillating guitar is a little more restrained, there's more keyboard and orchestration from Mic Michaeli, and the overall vibe is punchy, gutsy, rather than dark and heavy. ('U Devil U' sums up this new approach).

The title track is one of the more immediate, and a natural first single, with an infectious and pile-driving orchestral/guitar riff. 'Gonna Get Ready' is Classic Europe with Norum's wah-wah punctuating Joey Tempest's distinctive vocal, 'Catch That Plane' has an understated Deep Purple-esque organ-driven riff and the vocal harmonies remind me of 'Hush', whilst 'The Beast' has the urgency that characterised 'Secret Society' and is the closest in spirit to that album (qv 'The Getaway Plan').

'No Stone Unturned' is another heavily orchestrated piece, with an anthemic chorus that will go down well played live and Michaeli's fine orchestrations crop up also on 'Only Young Twice'.

It's not all out and out rockers. 'New Love In Town' is a truly superb mid-tempo ballad and a likely crossover success if single no.2. 'In My Time' is a long bluesy piece that has hints of 'Parisienne Walkways' with Norum's Gary Moore-esque motifs.

Another album highlight is 'Run With The Angels' starting with a sinewy John Leven bassline replicated by John Norum's riff and topped with his always-wonderful wah-inflected solo.

For those, like me, who really liked 'Secret Society' (and who can't get enough of John Norum's guitar) - and expected more of the same - the initial disappointment is soon overcome by the quality and consistency of songwriting and the musicianship on offer here. This is an album that yields its treasure through repeated listenings so don't expect that immediate, instant fix. And in truth the band have retained all the elements from their previous post-Millennium outings so this should have potentially wider appeal.

The renaissance of Europe has been one of the more interesting stories of recent years and 'Last Look At Eden' further consolidates their credentials as one of our finest melodic hard rock bands.

July 21st 2009: RIP, MARCEL JACOB...

Legendary vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (TALISMAN, JOURNEY, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) has issued the following statement:
"It is with deep regret and remorse I, along with fellow members of TALISMAN, am announcing our brother, longtime colleague and overall greatest musician we've ever played with, Marcel Jacob, is no longer with us as of today, Tuesday July 21, 2009. Marcel took his own life after many years of personal and health issues he was battling.
"We were mere days from starting what would have been our eighth TALISMAN studio album together, celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the band. I spoke with him just yesterday about finalizing the details that would get us started only to get the news this afternoon that my friend merely gave up on it all.
"I want him to be remembered as everything I have already mentioned above but more so, he helped influence so many musicians and songwriters. He was a quiet, gentle soul with a very intense passion for his craft. I have been associated with him since 1994 but it was when we started TALISMAN is when he truly became a brother, one of my dearest friends.
"It is far too early to say anything now but I plan to organize a memorial for his legacy, although not known by the masses, the ones who do see him as the genius I know he was.
"R.I.P. my friend, you will be sorely missed, you will be in my heart forever and I'll see you on the other side... I hope now you will get your dream and jam with Phil Lynott!!"
Jacob formed the band RISING FORCE with YNGWIE MALMSTEEN in 1978 and later became involved in the pre-EUROPE act called FORCE. Jacob was also a member of HUMAN CLAY, John Norum's (EUROPE) solo band and HUMANANIMAL. He was 45 years old.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 3, 2009) – Michelle Meldrum’s family and son Jake are honoring Michelle and the one year anniversary of her passing with a benefit concert through Dark Moon Entertainment and the Whisky.
On May 18, Michelle Meldrum, leader of the band Meldrum and former Phantom Blue guitarist, was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank in critical condition. She passed away late afternoon Wednesday, May 21, 2008 as a result of a cystic growth on her brain that had restricted oxygen and blood flow to her brain rendering her brain dead.
Meldrum had just completed writing and recording the bands soon to be released album with drummer Gene Hoglan, along with the new lineup Michele Madden (vocals) and Laura Christine (bass). The surviving band members plan to release the album later this year in tribute to their fallen band-mate.
Those who knew Michelle recognize that she lived every moment for the music, and was regarded as both an exceptional guitarist and a nurturer by her associates, friends, family and son.

April 25th 2009: THANK YOU ANTOFAGASTA!

The first show day turned out to be a very long one.......

Even though our plane was delayed 5 hours, some luggage went missing, no electricity in the dressing room. etc. it was all worth it when we met our fans in Antofagasta.  We had  a warm welcome indeed. They had even rented a huge bus filled it with fan club members following us to the hotel.....

Like always on the first show there were some other problems but the audience was great, they sang beautiful and it turned out to be a really cool show.

Hope to see you again
